Installation & Permissions
Set up GridLion, grant the permissions macOS requires, and confirm the system settings that make a spatial grid reliable.
Download and install
- Download the current DMG.
- Open the DMG and move GridLion into Applications.
- Launch GridLion. It runs as a menu-bar app, so it does not open a normal Dock window.
GridLion requires macOS 13 or later. The app menu lives in the menu bar and includes access to settings, Mission Control actions, and the Health Check window.
Accessibility permission
Accessibility is required for global shortcuts, Mission Control automation, and reliable Space switching from whichever app is active.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Accessibility.
- Enable GridLion.
- If macOS already has an older GridLion entry, remove the stale entry and add the installed app again.
Screen Recording permission
Screen Recording is optional. When granted on macOS 14 or later, GridLion can show screenshot-backed previews in the grid. Without it, switching, direct jumps, overlays, and the picker still work; cells use app icons or simple fallbacks instead.
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security, then Screen Recording.
- Enable GridLion, then quit and reopen the app if macOS asks you to.
Recommended Mission Control settings
GridLion is built around stable Space positions. For best results, open Mission Control settings and turn off Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use.
On multiple displays, enable Displays have separate Spaces if you want each screen to keep its own grid, hotkeys, and overlay behavior.
Setup checklist
- GridLion is installed in Applications.
- Accessibility permission is enabled.
- Screen Recording is enabled if you want screenshot previews.
- Automatic Space rearranging is disabled in Mission Control settings.
